The lifecycle of a domain name

The term “the lifecycle of a domain name” may sound unfamiliar to customers, but in fact many questions are related to the domain life cycle, such as:

1. What should I do after the domain expires? Do you register again after it expires, can you renew? Do you have to pay for an additional fee?

2. Why can’t I register when WHOIS Database shows that domain has expired?

3. Do different domain suffixes shares different life-cycle? Do they follow the same rule?

Intuitively, you may think that the domain will be deleted and released right after its expiration, and opened for public registration. But in fact, most domain names will not be opened for registration after their expiration. Instead, they will be released at different time according to the domain life cycle specified by various registration bureaus. The domain name life cycle includes the registration period, renewal grace period (freeze period), and high price redemption period and the deletion period. But not every domain name life cycle will go through these four stages. For example, TW series domain names have no redemption period.

Domain names are divided into two types: GTLD and ccTLD. Common general top-level domain names (GTLD), such as. Com. Net. Org, etc., and new GTLD which open application after GTLD , such as. Taipei. Shop. Link. App, etc. These domain names are in accordance with ICANN specifications, so their life cycle is basically the same. Please refer to the life cycle diagram of international domain names below. The registration and renewal period of most GTLD is 1-10 years, and Net-Chinese will inform customers by email 90 days prior to the expiration date. If the domain name is not renewed before the expiration date, it will enter the freeze period (40 days). During the freeze period, the domain name can still be renewed at the original price, but the DNS resolution will be interrupted on the 8th day after the expiration date, and the domain name will point to the parking page (non-advertising page) until the domain name is deleted. If the domain name is still not renewed at the end of the freeze period, it will enter into the high price redemption period (25 days). If the domain name still wants to use it, in addition to the annual renewal fee, it must pay the administrative fee for redemption. Finally, it enters the deletion period, waiting for the authority to delete and re-open the registration for this domain, but the exact deletion time of the authority can not be predicted.

The national and regional top-level domain names (ccTLDs) are managed individually by the administrations of respective countries or regions, such as .tw .cn .hk .uk .jp, etc. ccTLDs are presented in the form of two characters. The life cycle of these domain names will vary according to the rules of the administrations. You can find terms in the Net-Chinese domain name encyclopedia on our website, Here we will use the life cycle diagrams of three ccTLDs registered by Taiwan customers as examples. Generally speaking, the rules are the same as the previous international domain names. The registration and renewal period is 1-10 years. Net-Chinese will notify customers by email 90 days before the expiration date. However, the freeze period varies according to the rules of different administrations (TW and CN are 30 days;HK is 28 days) During this period, you may renew the domain name at the original price. Both CN and HK domain names will stop DNS resolution on the 8th day after the expiration date. In particular, on the first day after the expiration date, TW series domain names will interrupt DNS resolution, and there is no redemption period, but directly enter the freeze period (the redemption period of CN is 10 days; For HK, 55 days).

The domain name life cycle and relevant regulations set by Net-Chinese only apply to the domain registered in Net-Chinese, and do not represent the regulations of the administration or other registrants. Once again, the above description pertaining to the life cycle of the four domain names, while the life cycle of other domain names is not the same. For example, .jp can only be registered / renewed for one year, and there is no high age option .vn must be renewed 9 days in advance. It is recommended that you go to the domain name encyclopedia to inquire about the terms so as not to damage your rights and interests. If you have any questions about the query or use of the domain name encyclopedia, you can send e-mail to service@net-chinese.com
